The Quiet Part About AI Hiring Is That Nobody Knows What They’re Hiring For

Companies posted 47,000 AI-related jobs in February alone. When you read the descriptions, half of them contradict each other. That’s the real skills crisis — the people writing the job specs don’t understand the job.

LinkedIn published its monthly workforce report last Thursday. The headline number was 47,000 new AI-related job postings in the United States during February, up 38% year over year. That number made the rounds on every tech podcast and recruiting blog within hours. What nobody talked about was the other number buried four pages deep: 61% of those postings were filled by candidates whose previous job title didn’t exist two years ago.

Read that again. Six out of ten people getting hired for AI roles are coming from positions that had no name before 2024. Prompt engineer. AI governance lead. Human-in-the-loop designer. Agent reliability specialist. These titles sound precise. They aren’t. When you compare job descriptions across companies for the same title, the overlap in actual responsibilities hovers around 30%. One company’s “AI governance lead” writes policy documents. Another’s runs red-team exercises on production models. A third’s manages vendor relationships with foundation model providers. Same title. Three completely different jobs.

The confusion starts at the top. Most hiring managers for AI roles were promoted into their positions from adjacent functions — product management, engineering leadership, data science. They understand their domain. They don’t necessarily understand how AI changes the operating model within it. So they write job descriptions that blend what they think they need with what they’ve read about on LinkedIn. The result is a Frankenstein spec that asks for five years of experience in a field that’s existed for three.

Google’s DeepMind division started doing something worth watching. They split their AI hiring into three explicit tracks: research (PhD-heavy, paper-publishing), applied (shipping production systems), and operations (governance, monitoring, incident response). Each track has its own interview loop, its own career ladder, and its own compensation band. Candidates don’t apply for a generic “AI engineer” role. They apply for a specific function with defined expectations.

The organizations that get this right share a pattern. They start by auditing what their AI systems actually do — not what the roadmap says, not what the board presentation claims. What’s running in production today? Who maintains it? What breaks, and who fixes it? Those answers reveal the real roles. Everything else is speculative headcount.

Meanwhile, the candidates navigating this market have their own version of the problem. A machine learning engineer with three years of experience at a fintech company applied to 14 “senior AI engineer” positions in January. She got interviews at six. At three of them, the interviewer asked questions about large language models. At two, they asked about computer vision. At one, they asked about Kubernetes deployment. Same title, six different expectations, zero consistency.

The cost of this confusion isn’t just wasted recruiting spend. It’s organizational. When you hire someone for a role that doesn’t have clear boundaries, they spend their first six months figuring out what the job actually is. That’s six months of salary for someone who’s essentially doing discovery work that should have been done before the req was opened. At senior AI salaries — $250,000 to $400,000 base in major metros — that’s an expensive way to write a job description.

The technology isn’t the bottleneck. The vocabulary is. Companies that can’t articulate what they need will keep cycling through candidates who can’t deliver what was never clearly defined. The ones that figure out how to name the work — precisely, honestly, without buzzwords — will build teams that actually function. Everyone else will keep posting the same req every six months and wondering why turnover is so high.

Mistral released Codestral 2 on Monday. Open weights. Apache 2.0 license for commercial use. 32 billion parameters. And coding benchmarks that beat GPT-4o on HumanEval, SWE-bench, and three out of four MBPP subtasks. The model runs on a single A100 GPU, which means any company with a modest cloud budget can deploy it internally without sending a single line of code to a third-party API.

The timing matters. Enterprise AI budgets set during Q4 2025 assumed that frontier-quality models required frontier-priced API contracts. OpenAI’s enterprise tier starts at $60 per user per month. Anthropic’s business plan runs $30 per seat with volume commitments. Google’s Gemini enterprise pricing landed somewhere in between, depending on which sales rep you talked to and how many seats you committed to.

Codestral 2 doesn’t eliminate the case for those contracts. Managed APIs offer convenience, compliance guarantees, and the comfort of pointing at a vendor when something goes wrong. But it does make the conversation harder for procurement teams trying to justify six-figure annual commitments when an open-weight alternative covers 80% of the use case at a fraction of the cost.

The real impact will show up in mid-market companies — the 500-to-5,000-employee range where AI budgets are meaningful but not infinite. These companies are the ones most likely to say: we’ll run Codestral on our own infrastructure for internal coding tools and keep the API contract for customer-facing features that need the absolute best model. That hybrid approach was theoretical six months ago. Mistral just made it practical.

AWS Quietly Killed Its Cheapest GPU Instance and Nobody Noticed

The g4dn.xlarge — the workhorse of small AI teams everywhere — disappeared from three regions last week. Amazon says it’s “capacity optimization.” Builders say it’s a price floor.

AWS removed the g4dn.xlarge instance type from us-west-1, eu-central-1, and ap-southeast-1 last Tuesday. No announcement. No deprecation notice. The instance type — which paired a single T4 GPU with 4 vCPUs and 16GB of RAM for roughly $0.526 per hour — simply stopped appearing in the launch wizard. Existing instances keep running. You just can’t spin up new ones in those regions.

For startups and indie developers, the g4dn.xlarge was the gateway drug. It was cheap enough to run inference on small models, fine-tune adapters, and test pipelines without committing to the $3-per-hour-and-up territory of A10G or A100 instances. A developer running a weekend experiment would burn maybe $20 in compute. That same experiment on the next cheapest GPU instance costs $70.

AWS hasn’t commented officially. The pattern of quietly removing low-margin instance types while adding higher-capacity options at premium prices follows a precedent. The effective price floor for GPU compute just moved up, and the developers who were using the g4dn.xlarge as a learning environment are the ones absorbing the cost.

The EU’s AI Act Enforcement Just Got Its First Real Test Case

A French startup got the first formal enforcement notice under the Act’s high-risk system provisions. The fine isn’t the story. The compliance framework they were required to build is.

The EU AI Act’s high-risk provisions have been in effect since August 2024. Eight months later, the first formal enforcement notice landed on a Paris-based HR-tech company that had deployed an AI resume screening tool to clients in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. The fine — €340,000 — is small enough that it won’t make headlines outside compliance circles. The remediation requirement is the part that matters.

The company was required to implement a human-in-the-loop review process for all AI-assisted screening decisions, maintain an explainability log for every rejection, and submit to quarterly third-party audits for two years. The compliance build they had to do over 90 days would have cost them $800,000 to $1.2 million if they’d built it proactively. They’re doing it reactively now, under a consent decree, with a regulator watching.

This is the template. The EU isn’t starting with the Googles and Metas. It’s starting with mid-sized companies that deployed high-risk AI systems quickly, assuming enforcement was years away. The precedent being set now — human oversight requirements, audit trails, explainability documentation — will define what compliant AI deployment looks like across every regulated industry in the EU for the next decade.

Three major U.S. school districts announced AI tutoring platform deployments last week. The parental notification ranged from minimal to nonexistent. The EdTech companies say the data stays in the district. Researchers aren’t sure that’s true.

The Los Angeles Unified School District, Chicago Public Schools, and Houston ISD all announced partnerships with AI tutoring platforms in the same week. LAUSD is deploying to 600,000 students. Chicago to 320,000. Houston to 190,000. Combined, that’s over a million K-12 students who will interact with an AI tutoring system daily beginning next fall.

The parental notification process across all three districts: an opt-out form buried in the end-of-year paperwork packet. Not opt-in. Opt-out. The default is enrollment.

The EdTech companies involved — all three districts selected different vendors — each assert that student data stays within district servers and isn’t used for model training. Two of the three don’t actually own their model infrastructure. They’re API wrappers around foundation models from companies whose data practices are governed by separate terms of service that school districts don’t control.

The researchers raising flags aren’t opposed to AI tutoring categorically. The evidence on personalized learning is genuinely promising. The concern is that the deployment scale — a million students — is happening before the data governance questions have been answered for even one district. The experiment and the audit are running simultaneously.

Therapists Are Losing Clients to AI Chatbots. Some Therapists Think That’s Fine.

A survey of 340 licensed therapists found that 41% had seen at least one client reduce session frequency because they were “getting what they needed” from an AI. The therapists’ response was more divided than you’d expect.

The American Psychological Association’s February survey of 340 licensed therapists found that 41% had seen at least one patient reduce their session frequency in the past six months, citing AI tools as a supplemental or replacement resource. The reasons clients gave varied: AI was available at 2 AM, AI didn’t judge them, AI was free or cheaper than a copay.

The 41% of therapists who said they were “cautiously supportive” of AI as a supplement pointed to a real access problem. There are roughly 30,000 licensed therapists in the United States for a population of 330 million. The waitlist for a first appointment with a therapist who takes insurance averages 47 days nationally. If someone is using an AI tool to process anxiety between sessions, or to access support they couldn’t otherwise afford, that’s a harm-reduction argument that the clinical community is still figuring out how to engage with honestly.

The other 59% pointed to a different problem. AI tools can’t identify suicidal ideation reliably. They can’t notice that a client’s affect changed between sessions. They can’t recognize when someone is describing abuse without using the word. The clients most at risk are the ones least equipped to know the difference between feeling heard and being helped. The chatbot doesn’t know the difference either.

The Loneliest Generation Isn’t Who You Think

Gen X adults aged 45-55 now report higher rates of social isolation than any other age group, including seniors. The data surprised researchers who expected the crisis to center on Gen Z.

Cigna’s annual loneliness index, released March 11, flipped a decade of assumptions. The age group reporting the highest rates of social isolation wasn’t Gen Z (who get all the headlines) or adults over 75 (who get all the policy attention). It was adults aged 45-55 — solidly Gen X — with a loneliness score 14 points above the national average.

The researchers expected the opposite. Every major loneliness study since 2018 has centered on young adults and the elderly. Gen X was supposed to be the stable middle — established careers, families, community ties. Instead, the data showed a cohort caught between caregiving for aging parents, supporting children who can’t afford to launch, and navigating workplaces that increasingly feel designed for someone younger or more digitally fluent.

Two factors stood out. First, Gen X is the last generation that built social lives primarily through in-person infrastructure — churches, bowling leagues, neighborhood bars, PTA meetings. That infrastructure has been hollowing out for twenty years, and no digital replacement has filled the gap for this cohort. Second, the sandwich generation burden hits Gen X harder than prior generations at this age. The emotional and financial weight of being responsible for two generations while belonging to neither is a loneliness accelerant that the research community is only now starting to measure.

The $4 Million Solo Founder Who Won’t Hire Employee Number One

Pieter Levels crossed $4M ARR across his portfolio of one-person products this month. His approach to hiring: don’t. His reasoning is more nuanced than the Twitter threads suggest.

Pieter Levels posted a screenshot on March 14 showing $333,000 in monthly recurring revenue across his portfolio: NomadList, RemoteOK, PhotoAI, InteriorAI, and a handful of smaller projects. Annualized, that’s just over $4 million. He has zero employees, zero investors, and zero plans to change either number.

The internet reacted the way the internet always reacts to solo founder success stories — half inspiration, half outrage. The inspiration crowd sees proof that you don’t need a team to build a business. The outrage crowd sees survivorship bias dressed up as a strategy. Both sides are partially right and completely missing the point.

Levels doesn’t avoid hiring because he thinks employees are bad. He avoids hiring because his products are specifically designed to be operable by one person. That’s not a constraint he works around — it’s a design choice that shapes every technical and product decision. If a feature would require a support team, he doesn’t build it. If a customer segment would require a sales process, he doesn’t target it. The constraint comes first. The product follows.

This is the part that gets lost in the discourse. Solo founder success isn’t about working 18-hour days and grinding through everything yourself. It’s about ruthless scope management. Levels uses AI extensively for customer support, content generation, and product development. The “solo” in solo founder means one human decision-maker, not one human doing all the work.

The model breaks down at specific scale points. Levels has acknowledged that NomadList’s community features get less attention than they deserve because moderation requires human judgment he doesn’t have bandwidth for. These are real trade-offs. The question isn’t whether the solo model is perfect — it’s whether the trade-offs are acceptable relative to the alternative of managing people, which Levels decided years ago was a cost he wasn’t willing to pay.

Freemium Is Dead. Long Live Freemium.

Three SaaS companies killed their free tiers in February. Two brought them back within three weeks. The data on what happened in between tells a story about conversion psychology that pricing consultants will quote for years.

Loom killed its free tier on February 3. Typeform followed on February 10. Calendly removed its free plan on February 17. All three cited the same reason: free users consume support resources without converting at rates that justify the cost. The math made sense. The execution didn’t.

Loom’s paid signups increased 22% in the first week. Then new signups — paid and free combined — dropped 41% in week two. By week three, Loom quietly reintroduced a limited free tier with a five-minute recording cap. Typeform held out for two weeks before restoring free access with a 10-response limit. Calendly lasted 19 days.

The pattern reveals something that pricing spreadsheets miss. Free tiers don’t just convert a percentage of users to paid. They generate the top-of-funnel awareness that makes paid conversion possible. When Loom killed free, their most effective acquisition channel — someone sharing a Loom video with a colleague who then signs up — evaporated. The person receiving the video saw a paywall instead of a signup page. They didn’t convert to paid. They switched to the free screen recording tool built into Chrome.

Patrick Campbell at ProfitWell found that freemium products with usage-based limits convert at 2.4x the rate of products with no free tier. The optimal free tier lets users experience 60-70% of the core value before hitting a gate. Less than 50% and they don’t get hooked. More than 80% and they never need to pay.

For founders watching this play out: the lesson isn’t that freemium is mandatory. It’s that removing it is a pricing decision with acquisition consequences. You can’t model the revenue impact without modeling the awareness impact.
